I eagerly awaited this reunion like most of the world, but aside from the nostalgia of seeing them all together again on the rebuilt set and sharing the emotions of their sentimentality, overall I was pretty underwhelmed. There really were no revelations here, no "lifting the curtain" for an intimate look behind the scenes. You'd think a special that touted the cast all being in the same room together for only the second time in 17 years would actually take advantage of it and focus the interviews on the cast. Instead, they fluffed out this special with random celebrity commentary and guest appearances that lent nothing of value, just to attest to the impact the show had on people's lives like we don't all know from personal experience how much this show meant to us. Isn't that why we're here watching in the first place? I could accept it for what it is and hope for something more befitting next time around, but when Courtney said, "This will be the last time that we're ever asked about the show, as a group, that we will do this. We're not gonna do this again in 15 more years", I can't help but feel like a once in a lifetime opportunity for a worthy reunion special was greatly wasted.
Nobody talks like this in the middle of a heated argument, especially with alcohol involved. The passion was there in the physical acting, but the verbose lines felt entirely too premeditated and rehearsed to be delivered organically as they would be in a spontaneous lover's spat. They just take turns spouting off eloquently composed diatribe. Cinematography is the one redeeming quality. Beyond that, I couldn't get past the toxicity of their psychological jabs to find the takeaway of this abusive character study with no resolution. In summation: TLDR; Relationships are messy and Sam Levinson's grudge for Katie Walsh runs deep.
