If one has never seen any horror film in their entire life before, then, I guess, Smile can be an entertaining movie. Otherwise it is boring, uninspired and very predictable. There was not a single moment when I thought: Oh, that was surprising or creepy or new in any way. Smile is like a cheap copy or mix of hundreds of other horror films with the smiling faces being the only difference. Some artistic attempts were even unintentionally funny, for example when the camera rapidly zooms to the telephone several times like in a 60s-movie.
Funnily enough, my first thought was: This might have worked better as a short film. Afterwards I read that Smile IS actually based on a short film... Should have stayed one.

I had to smile after reading so many comments about how much they liked the first half of the film and disliked the second part. To me it was exactly the other way round. Tastes differ, I guess. XD Or depend on what you expect from a film. I want to be surprised, I want to see something new and individual, not just the next mediocre zombie-action-survival-film in a long row of zombie-action-survival-films. Part two did pretty well in that way.
In 28 years later we see a new society, far from civilisation, that does not only try to survive in this new inhospitable world, but to LIVE in it. I liked that idea and the implementation as a coming-of-age-story about a young teenage boy growing up in this society. The idea was worked out sometimes better, sometimes worse (plotholes and lack of logic included).
I would not say I disliked the first part of the film, it had its moments, especially stylistically. But it was waaay too long, with waaay too much of the same that you have seen in so many other zombie or apocalyptic films before. Actually, I was a little bit bored - and involuntarily amused, anytime someone grunts the stupid word "alpha" so fervently and heavily with meaning. I only missed the dum-dum-duuuum-flourish. Part two did focus much more on the interpersonal relationships and the coming-of-age-story, which makes 28 years later an entertaining thought experiment that stands out against other comparable films.
