  • Not bad.

First of all, I tracked down this film because of the cast. This film boasts Vincent Price, Gene Tierney, Paul Muni, and Nigel Bruce, which sounds like a great treat. Unfortunately, the film fails them. You can see each of them struggling to bring this movie to life with each line they deliver, but it just isn't enough. Although I was happy to see these stars, the film in its entirety isn't worth watching for most.

The film tells the story of an Englishman from the courts of King Charles II, who is exiled to Canada, and meets up with fur traders in jail. He bands together with them to hatch a scheme that will get him back in good standing with the king and his friends back home. This involves a lot of hard work, and some meddling in their business by the French government in Canada who want their cut of the money. They find their way to England and explain to the king what their idea is. Eventually, he agrees to their plans, although there are still some squabbles and fights along the way. I wont tell how it ends, but it isn't hard to tell whether or not they succeed.

As you may have guessed by my description, this is a fictionalized account of the history of fur traders. If you aren't interested in Canadian, Indian, or American history of this time period, or maybe even if you are, this is going to be a boring movie to watch. Many times, there are scenes of exposition to explain what was going on in history at the time. Either that, or characters sit around and talk for a long time about laws, rules, and their future plans. There just isn't enough action for a film that is supposed to have adventure as well as history.

The only reason why I didn't give this film a lower score was the actors. They really tried their hardest. Even those who played the Indians and the French gave better performances than they needed to. I was happy to see that each nation was represented fairly as well. Other films around this time period might not have shown as much respect, or would have used stereotypical behavior. So, that was a plus.

Overall, it isn't one of the worst historical adventure films I have seen. It certainly isn't a good one either, unfortunately. Because it is stuck in that limbo of 'just okay' films, it's been forgotten about by audiences for a long time. I'm not saying that this is a forgotten gem we need to resurrect, but if you are a die hard fan of these actors, like me, you should check it out if you can.

  • Krampus is exactly what we need.

I first heard of the story of Krampus from a Christmas episode of American Dad!, and I've been surprised that none of the reviews I watched online for this film mentioned that since it's the one of the only times Krampus is mentioned in pop culture. Perhaps now that this movie is out, we will hear more about him. I sure hope so, because this is the perfect Christmas tale for the kids and families out there. It's a story that we could all benefit from, in fact.

The film starts out by showing us the insanity that we all know as Christmas shopping. It's all about how materialism and family strife can wreak havoc on our emotions during holidays. The problems all trickle down to the children, who should really be enjoying and celebrating the season instead of getting caught up in the stress the adult deal with. So, our main character rips up his letter to Santa, and wishes for all of this to be over with.

Krampus, being the evil side of Christmas, grants the wish. The characters are slowly plunged into a horror story. Their Christmas story becomes a story of survival. Will they be able to get along for the sake of surviving Christmas?

There were only a few things that I really had a problem with. That's why it gets an 8 instead of a 9 or 10. The first reason comes from the fact that I am a serious horror fan, and felt disappointed at the lack of blood and gore in the film. That reason may keep some genre fans away, but also makes the film more accessible to the kid and family audience, whom the film is really for. The other problem I had with the film was with the editing during the scenes with Krampus' helpers, because it was quite jumpy and made it hard to see everything going on the entire time.

Again, this is a good movie. I highly recommend it as one of the best new family Christmas movies. Krampus is exactly what we need to balance out the holiday. This will definitely be remembered as more than just another holiday themed horror movie. It will, hopefully, become a staple for Christmas viewing.

  • A fun trip.

I was initially fearful that this movie would be terrible, especially after finding out that it wouldn't be on the big screen. The idea of seeing David Spade starring in a big movie again really excited me too. It's been a long time, and I'm a big fan. So, I watched this movie as soon as I could online.

The movie is a fun trip through the mind of Joe Dirt set in a familiar story so it's easy to understand. If you hadn't seen the first film, you would have no problem seeing this one for sure. And if you have seen the first one, you'll enjoy seeing all of the characters from the first again in a different way. At the end of the day, Joe is a real down to earth guy who is always learning and growing, and that's what this movie is about.

It wasn't the perfect sequel, though. As others have noted, it was not a movie we really needed. The story of Joe Dirt could have ended with the first movie just fine. The first had a more original feeling story, whereas this movie is recycling the It's a Wonderful Life story again. Doing that makes it feel more like a long episode of a TV show, since so many shows have used that plot. Not to mention that there are a couple of gags that just weren't funny at all.

This definitely isn't the better movie, as Spade claims. But if you're interested in getting more insight into Joe Dirt's mind, you will enjoy it. I know I enjoyed the ride. There were more funny jokes and fun moments that fit right into the feel of Joe Dirt. Plus, it's free to watch right now, so why wouldn't you at least check it out?
