My wife loves to watch disaster movies, and has no qualms about watching bad ones. As such, this movie qualifies.
The rationale for the events in this movie is entirely incomprehensible. There are two scientists (a woman and her boss) that discuss what could amount to an Extinction Level Event with less concern than you might while pondering where you should go for lunch.
The main character, his family, and another family drawn into this drama make nonsensical decisions one after another. It's definitely not "exciting", but you'll watch with wonder as they do it. The teenage daughter is one of the worst humans depicted on screen.
The effects and props are some of the cheapest I have seen.

I thought this might fit into the "Family Movie" genre, you know - some stuff for the kids, but the adults can be entertained too? The first few minutes were kind of humorous, as we watch what appears to be a burglar escape a cop on his trail. Then the animals showed up. The dog is wildly unconvincing GCI off the bat, and then the cat worse so. Then the pets started talking to each other, and that's when the movie fully jumped the shark. I should have done more research before pressing "start". Or at least watched a trailer.
There's not much else to say; the female lead was pretty, so there's that. Nothing else was memorable. In another 72 hours, I will completely forget that I watched this movie.

I don't quite get the low rating and silly negative reviews for this film. The people who complain that it is slow are clearly youngsters with short attention spans. I found the story in general, as well as the characters compelling up until the end. I also found practical effects refreshing in an age of overdone CGI. Filmed differently, it could have been a full-on homage to classic sci-fi movies.
However, I would say that I found the conclusion disappointing and unfulfilling. There is an impression that all is well, and relationships are restored. The implication of happy ending for everyone was really not realistic given all the things that preceded.
