I'm not sure why the reviews are so low! Yes the plot is predictable and it's very cheesy. But I still really loved it! It's not Oscar worthy but it's a nice movie to just turn off your brain for a bit and just relax to. I'm a sucker for Hallmark/predictable romance story lines. And this movie falls right into that category.
I'm not Chinese so I would not be able to comment on the cultural parts of the movie. However I am Asian American so it was nice to see people who look like me on screen.
I did wish they put a little more screen time with the "five dates" since that's the premise of the movie. Also the "best friend" felt like a one dimensional character. Wish the friend had more character development.

Okay, so I kept seeing clips of this on Tik Tok and decided to finally watch it. The gym scene with the mom was what reeled me in. I went in expecting very little and I was pleasantly surprised! The movie was entertaining and kept my attention. Gave me modern "Scream" vibes with a touch of time travel. I really liked the PC inserts in the film. It gave a nice contrast to the 80s vibes.
The only complaint I had was the "killer". It didn't seem well planned out and the foreshadowing wasn't all that great.
Otherwise, the ending was cute and I really liked how everything wrapped up. It was a nice happy ending.

Was this perfect? No, it's very Disney. However this show is still absolutely amazing and l love the homage to the retro style of old Chinese films. My partner grew up watching the Monkey King as a kid and loved how they encorproated it to the story. And as an Asian American myself, the representation I felt made my inner child cry happy tears. I saw the sadness and frustration the dad Simon faced and it just directly mirrored my dad's own experience, looking "different" from everyone else and being the butt of the joke. And I love how they portrayed the mom! Not a tiger mom, but I felt how much she genuinely care for Jin and just wanted him to follow his dreams. Thank you disney, this one was a good one and I hope for more Asian heros and heroines in the future!
