  • Zeman and Vernes Marvel

For some reason, I've watched this movie more times than any other! I had an English VHS that ran LP and it didn't matter. This movie is just so much fun. Zeman seems to have an endless bag of tricks that fit the story to a T.

It's a perfect sci-fantasy flick in just about every way done in Zeman's immersive imaginative way. A young "foreign legion" officer finds himself in a sea of conflicts as he tries to help the "girl of his dreams". All the while the world is facing cataclysm from a "close approaching" comet. Zeman is the master of what I would call, "impressionistic cinema" where surrealism adds immense detail to the story somehow.

The score is lavish and simple at the same time and pulls you in with it's odd orchestral intensity and has it's own surrealism. The action is packed with visual finesse. The actors are comical in the reactions to their situations and there lays a wealth of social commentary. Like the young officer's pointing out to his "lady in distress" a strange creature making evolutionary transformations before his eyes, only in the reverse order... Lot's of great "sight gags".

I've lost my VHS copy... too bad!

  • Treats the Book of Genesis with Awe and Respect

We saw the 3D version and the projectionist had a little trouble setting the system to 3D mode apparently since the image was blurry and muddled with the glasses on for just the first minute or so. Heard a click from the booth and that cleared up so the title popped off the screen just in front of us.

I have a degree in biology and so I was very interested in the science part. Knowing this is from Eric Hovind, there would be lots of creation-evolution content. Yes, this certainly was a central theme and of course this should be since the Book of Genesis is the definitive revelation on our origins! This is a film for anyone who wants to get a clear picture of the present state of Darwin's theory with particular emphasis on its application to humans. The film moves from lush CGI landscapes to interviews with various people ranging from multi-PhD scientists to pastors and even a Messianic Jewish evangelist with a nice contrast and flow.

There is a "no holds barred" critical treatment of Darwin's theory and the billions of years old earth assumptions needed to support it. I even heard "spontaneous generation" mentioned several times as a key element of evolution theory and abiogenesis discussions. A point I have often made as well.

There are some magnificent long CGI sequences of Adam and Eve enjoying the vistas of their Garden of Eden in amazing splendor. Dinosaurs are there as well in ways that may change your understanding of them.

This film gets high marks in my opinion because of its quality as cinema and because of its bold and passionate appeal to the human heart to hear and respond to the great message of the Book itself!

  • Well Deserved Jab at Modern Academia and Scientific Establishment

This is a well scripted, acted and directed portrayal of a seeming hardcore atheist freshman philosophy teacher who gets his kicks by bullying Christians and other non-atheists by requiring them to sign a statement declaring that God is dead. Though the professor's portrayal may seem over the top quite a bit, nonetheless he does represent an accurate metaphor for the attitude of much of academia and the sciences towards believers.

The story nicely pits "authority" against sound logic and the bold confrontation of faulty reasoning. The student that decides to take on his "out of line" prof and present his case for God's existence is allowed 3 class periods to do so. A few other students are very interested in how this will go down and the prof tries many ways to bully his way out of the situation finds himself in. Meanwhile, the student's girlfriend confronts him about jeopardizing their plans for a future together by going thru with it.

The prof's girlfriend is getting tired of his selfish episodes and jabs at her faith in God. Meanwhile a girl from a strict Muslim family is worried about he father learning about her Christian faith. At the same time a pastor and a visiting pastor friend are finding obstacles to their plans. And so it is that an invisible hand is also at work...

It all makes for plenty of drama and good acting, with well developed characters. Even the opening scene itself is outstanding in the way it sets the stage for everything else! Good movie and great lessons!
