I have to admit that I've been dreading watching this movie. The original Matrix is my favorite movie. This one just felt totally unnecessary.
But I liked how the first part of the movie dealt with Neo being forced into making a fourth part of his game, and explored some of the feelings that Lana had to have been having. In the coffee shop, Neo says he wrote a bit of himself into the main character of his game, just as Lana did with Neo. I felt that this is a great way to explain to the diehard fans why this movie exists in the first place.
And through that lens, overall I thought the story was pretty well done. One of the things that disappointed me most about Reloaded was how heavily it relied on the action sequences and how little plot there was. This movie was more balanced.
I didn't mind the explanation for why things are as they are (Neo and Trinity being alive, why is there still a Matrix), which were questions I didn't think could be appropriately explained.
Lastly, it was great to see members of the Sense8 cast in these roles, and reprisals from some of the cast of the previous films.
It's nowhere near the original Matrix, but in my opinion, no movie is. I wasn't expecting much, so I wasn't disappointed. It was entertaining and nostalgic.
Oh, my one gripe was having the Bugs character ask "what's up doc?" Haha. Groan.
