  • god of the gap

Ancient Aliens looks at archaeological puzzles and historical enigmas, but, and this is my main point of issue, it falls back on a god-of-the-gaps argument. Whenever they encounter something that current research has not yet fully explained, whether it's the precision of certain stone monuments, advanced engineering techniques, or sophisticated astronomical alignments, the discussion, more often than not, concludes with the intervention of extraterrestrials. This, in my opinion, takes away from the ingenuity of past civilizations and stops viewers from considering more conventional explanations rooted in human creativity, cultural exchange, and technological evolution. Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with the fact that there are aliens, and they have been, or even are, here. But, defaulting to alien involvement begins to feel like a formula rather than genuine inquiry. A more balanced approach, that includes the ingenuity of ancient man, alongside speculative ideas, would make the series' credibility and better honour the achievements of ancient humanity.

  • predictable

I had really high hopes for this series. I love Aldis Hodge, great actor, as are all the actors in this series. Unfortunately, the writing is something else altogether. They need to go. The writing is trite, highly predictable and frankly boring. I tried. But, from the first episode, it was obvious that it would get more and more predictable and just obvious.

The writers didn't disappoint. The overarching theme of his wives death, and how it keeps playing with his head, again, this is just the typical trope. The troubled detective that gets involved in a case because he is brilliant, but has demons. When will you get better writing?

  • Like many shows on MHzChoice it's ok

This is an old idea but with a twist. Buddy cop show with individuals from 2 different worlds, one secular and one religious. Both characters very likeable and both are fun to watch in terms of their interactions (her sisters are quite fun as well). The monk is great, he is done well, intelligent, insightful and a bit naive about the world. She is intelligent, jaded and thinks the world is crap. Both are right.

Overall it's worth watching. It's not overly challenging, and not a lot of brainpower is needed, it's just a nice series. Pleasant. Some other reviews are overly negative about her character, I think that is just their personal bias about women in certain roles.
