Maara

  • Maara is nothing short of visual poetry

Maara with R. Madhavan and Shraddha Srinath in the primary roles narrates the story of a restoration artist Paaru (Shraddha Srinath), in search of a carefree vagabond Maara (R. Madhavan) after finding a sketchbook and a picture of him while staying at his house. While most of the plot and screenplay is adapted from the original.

    R. Madhavan was at his natural best, charming, and portrayed the role of Maara with ease. Shraddha Srinath's innocent, spotless look and body language fitted her character well, she carried the film with her enchanting looks, expressions, and her ability to perform is impeccable.

The best part was how the director hand-picked the supporting cast enhanced the movie, be it M. S. Baskhar, Guru Soma Sundaram, and Kishore. Even though they appear for a relatively short screen time, they added positivity to the film. Veteran actor Mouli scores the best in the heartful climax, and his pure love for his lost-girlfriend was portrayed splendidly on-screen.

Ghibran's songs and background score blended into the movie solidly as they did not serve as a disturbance to the ongoing narrative. Cinematography is my biggest take from the film. The movie is visually rich, capturing the various colours and exquisite locations.

Debutant director Dhilip Kumar does his job flawlessly by telling an emotional story with Maara. His ability to beautifully capture those subtle emotions.

On the outset, Maara is nothing short of visual poetry. The cast along with the story lives in their character and with a top-notch technical team, Dhilip Kumar delivers one of the finest remakes that has the potential to overshadow the original.

  • Mookutthi Amman is a Fun Watch.

Nayanthara does nothing but walk around in Lalitha Jewelery and Saravana Stores Sarees.

RJ Balaji does his usual bit about being the angry young man. He acts well and is funny at times (His Dialouge where he talks of Ammans objectives of Reforms in India - had me in splits). His emotions, His Suppressed Anger are all excellent for comic relief.

The Baba Actor is the usual caricature mixture of Nithyananda and Ramdev. It is Urvashi who steals the show. Her emotions, her comedy is flawless. Simply flawless. As a mother desperate to save face from embarrassment who resorts to lying all the time - she is perfect and her sorrows when finally, being confronted by her son is also priceless to watch.

One questions remain why was the fun targeted at Hindu Rituals or babas? Others??

  • It was disappointing, at least to me.

The very first scene itself was like any Vijay movie. The airport does not give permission to land Surya's flight (due to Villain's influence) in Chennai Airport. If they still land the plane in Chennai Airport, their plane might be impounded (again due to Villain's influence). So, Surya advises to land the plane in Tambaram airforce runway. Surprisingly, by the time the flight reaches from Meenambakkam to Tambaram, Surya somehow reaches Tambaram just in a bike. I thought only Rajni and Vijay could do this. Now, welcome to the list, Surya! Surya himself drives the plane at a point of time, he is also a flight mechanic or engineer, he is also CEO. What not! After seeing an overwhelming positive response, at least expected the movie to be realistic. Do know that some heroisms are added to make the movie lively, but since the movie is based on real-life incidents, too much heroism was bad. Whole of Surya's village paying for him also sounds unbelievable. Reminds me of Sangamam movie. I also did not like the emotional scene where Surya is not able to pay for flight. Actually I believe that army officers who can fly engines are well paid and It's bit unbelievable that he did not have money. Considering that he had money, but did not take the money to airport is also unlikely, as in an era where flights were less common, he should have assumed the worse case of unavailability of economic class ticket and took more money. That scene was not okay, at least for me. But I liked the scenes which involved the heroine. It's nice see a determined character as a heroine in movies rather than trying to portray them as cute idiot dolls. Music was decent. The yellowish shade of cinematography was actually not pleasant to watch. I think they are good for movies that show the underworld, not for the ones like this. Over-all the movie was okayish. But I'm glad that this movie worked out for Surya. He was waiting for a break for a long time.
