I love this director's Atonement.
I have no interest in Pride and Prejudice.
I like the British (French director)1948 film of AK,I liked the 1970s BBC version.
I love the 1961 BBC version with some guy called Sean Connery playing the sexy officer.
I have had the dvd of this 2012 version for ages finally watched it.
Well I have to say I am disappointed.
I bet the director was inspired by Oh What A Lovely War.
That film was set most on a pier, this film mostly set in an actual theatre.
It seems like pointless showing of to chose that setting.
Apart from the setting the film has less than perfect casting.
Keira Knightley is beautiful yes and she can act but in this she does the I AM SURPRISED MEN ARE ATTRACTED TO ME thing that she often does.
But Keira is not a let down in this but she has given better performances.
You can't believe she is swept of her feet at any point in the film.
I have nothing against Arron-Taylor Johnstone but he is badly miscast in this.
He is too young and he doesn't seem that fascinating as a character.
With Sean Connery in the 1961 BBC drama you can see why women would not be unable to resist him.
I wasn't gripped by the story or the look of the film So I am disappointed but the film is not a disaster despite its various faults.
The 1948 film is my favourite version,it surprises me it is not better known.

I saw trailers for this and did not expect it to be my thing, somehow I thought it was a medical drama.
But having decided to see the film I thought it was a great film.
It is NOT a medical drama and is NOT a horror film either.
I give no plot spoilers, partly because the plot would be hard to explain.
I liked everything about this film it was moving and every minute on screen is well used.
I have to praise the plot/script.
The viewer needs to pay attention DON'T PLAY WITH YOUR PHONE or TALK TO YOUR FRIEND while watching this.
It is a film for adults.
I have to praise the cast and the casting.
I was impressed by some of the actors who I don't recall seeing before and Mia Sara and Mark Hammill were outstanding.
I liked the music in this,it was used well.
Wang Chung will be glad of the royalty cheque?
I liked everything about this film.
The locations make the fictional town look very attractive.
I see a lot of films and this is one of the few I would advise people to check out.

I have this on dvd and recently shelled out for a new and well restored blu ray.
This was made in 1951 and is set in 1920s Syria.
I am not an expert on the Mcarthy episode of American history but considering how Bogart retreated from his Hollywood 10 views his film is surprisingly left wing.
But maybe it is not so left wing because America is supposed to be anti colonies?
But the plot does go over the dilemmas of an occupying army,do you just use force or you do you try to use brains as well?
Assuming that unlike me you are not interested in counter insurgency theory what about the film?
It is almost impossible not to compare this film and Bogart's character in it with the man he played in Casablanca?
It is nowhere near as good as Casablanca but we should accept that and like it for what it is.
It is quite dramatic and it looks good in a classic Hollywood era way.
The story is from a book by a famed French novelist.
The screenplay is by Hans Jacoby and A I Bezzerides.
Bezzerides wrote a few well known films.
He seems to be a bit of a cult figure because he lived a long time and even made a documentary about himself.
The plot charges on with action scenes and some romance.
Bogart manages to not looked bored in this.
In some of his later films he does not seem involved in the role but he is fine in this.
Lee J Cobb is very watchable as usual.
The surprise actor in this is Marta Toren who is just beautiful.
She was in a few films but I don't think she was ever well known.
This is a good not great film.
Unless you hate films from this period you will like it if you give it a chance.
In a sense it is a timeless story ,morality versus political reality, the need for income versus conscience.
I must read a book about Bogart's film career because he made so many films that are forgotten.
