I watched the film a few days ago, and have been wondering for a few days now why I am left with such an unsatisfied feeling.
The subject is interesting.
The sets and the world that has been built up are spectacular. The music is perfect. The special effects are impressive.
And yet... Somewhere the film was built too much around a "recipe". There are too many stereotypes in it. The story seems complicated at first sight, but is in fact very simple. The story itself is not balanced, there is hardly any layering in it.
In the end this is a cocktail of Blade Runner 1, Apocalypse Now, Avatar 1 and a few more... The whole thing is too much of a decoction.
There is also little emotion in the acting. The characters behave like caricatures.
Finally, I also found the film quite violent, and I wonder whether this was necessary to support the story.
In short: a missed opportunity, I think.

This is a remarkable short movie, with high emotional strength.
SciFi as a society-mirror at its best.
This movie is a well made "sequel". I agree with many comments on this site: this is not a sequel, but a - to much commercially inspired - remake. The visual effects are perfect, the music is excellent, the actors are doing a perfect job. But still... the real Star Wars spirit is missing so much. The storyline is unidimensional and simplistic, the emotions are rather flat... Maybe the story was to complete after episode VI, and maybe it's just not possible to continue to milk this cow in a sensible way. I feel a bit betrayed in my expectations. For Episodes VIII, IX, X, .... till IC, I will wait for the BR-disk to be available instead of going to the movie theater.
