At first, watching this film I was not sure about the narrative flow. About 15 minutes into the film, I was able to follow it's non-linear structure. What ended up was a beautifully made film with excellent performances.
Having never read any of the works by Flannery O'Connor, I will definitely be reading it now.
As a Roman Catholic, this film was more moving to me than a lot of tripe that is normally put out. It is very easy to be like everyone else and live frivolously, but when you try to live up to your conscience (and often fail), you can certainly understand the struggles Flannery went through.

Ok first, the good points about this film. It had great visuals consistent with what many decent horror films have. Excellent colour palette. Character development is generally good however this is where it all goes downhill from here.
I did not feel sympathetic to a single character in this film. The characters felt very disgruntled, not a single character was truly happy. It was like a downward spiral into depression as the film progressed. The characters seem to be complete idiots and unable to follow instructions or had to repeat instructions, which themselves were nonsensical. The autistic boy was just plain annoying and irrelevant to this film. The father seems to be fairly ids
The plot is nonsensical, incoherent and bloated. The director indicated in an interview he does not use religion is a major reason for this. Evil can only be explained or demonstrated within the context of religion. There is no true explanation of why this version of evil (if you can call it that) exists. It seems like he was trying to hard to fill in gaps where none needs to be there.
There is a reason why films like The Exorcist and The Witch provide an atmosphere and story and why this film is just a silly waste of time. Yes, it may be different than standard horror fare but that's about it.

If you are a human being who cares about human life.
I find it interesting that people can deride this film because they don't like the subject matter or how their conscience is affected. There seems to be no problem with giving a movie a high rating if it is for social justice issues.
Truly, we live in an era of double standards.
