I recently rewatched this and really enjoyed it. Obviously it's a low-budget B-flick. However, the writing's actually really good and there are some big-name actors in here.
Are the effects top-notch? No.
The cool ideas are there though. The performances are wild. And the film has heart. Even the score is quite good.
You can tell that, if the people who put this together had a larger budget, they'd be able to give us something much more grand. Regardless, they really tried to give the film a sense of style -- especially with the opening sequence.
If you want something a bit different that the usual slop, this is worth checking out.

This series is remarkable and an enjoyable watch -- especially the second half. The artwork is great, characters are interesting (especially Rau Le Creuset "The Crucible").
They do a great job of rounding out the characters on all sides instead of trying to present them as 'bad' or 'good'. There are hot-shot characters on both sides that you'll find yourself rooting for since there's so much more to them than being legends of the battlefield.
It's the older characters that really end up stealing the show and the younger ones that are less interesting to watch. Rau Le Creuset's monologue at the end is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I hear there are two different English dubs of this. Luckily I watched the good one. The voice actor deserves an award and really seems to understand the character he's playing. Now I don't know who I like best -- Rau Le Creuset or Char Aznable; they're both so interesting.
Don't listen to those who try to trash this series. It's actually some of the best Gundam made (and I've seem a lot of Gundam material). It's good enough that I plan to watch at least the second half again. The sheer idea of watching a series more than once is almost unheard of for me.
Highly recommended.
