I don't give out 10/10 lightly. This short series is very well written, great storytelling, utterly believable characters and beautiful photography of beautiful countryside. I cannot praise it highly enough.
In my life I have watched 100's of westerns and enjoyed most of them. But none have matched up to the reality of life in the days of the wagon train like this story. Looking at the hardships that the pioneers endured, from the comfort of the 21st century, it is difficult to understand the motivation of these people to risk death or worse to get the their destination. Maybe the immigrants that cross the English Channel in small rubber boats will be able to understand them.
A solid 10 out of 10.

An outstanding performance from the amazing Meryl Streep, playing a character with few redeeming features, supported by a strong cast but in a somewhat unsatisfying family drama. Ms Streep has the uncanny knack of inhabiting the character to such an extent that, even knowing that you are watching a performance, you can believe it is reality. I would give it 10 stars for her performance but the unrelenting misery of the story brought it down a notch for me.
