The art of Film making has awakened in making this movie.
I have heard people praise this movie for using practical effects and film over Digital and Digital, And it may very well be a factor , But even the CGI doesn't look like normal CGI and the Film could have been shot on devices that just emulated what it looked like since of course it had to be digitized anyway eventually seeing as that is how you will see it in theaters and there are still a lot of CGI effects in it. But what this film has brought back is greater then the medium its shot on ( but not printed ).
It has brought back lighting , music , the fine art mixing different kinds of effects in a believable way , stunt work ,original performances etc. Not only is there less GCI ; there are less wires , less stylized flat compositions that feel as if the camera is a floating giant looking into a box diorama. The Characters sweat puff and run not only like real people, no they run and sweat like you haven't sweat yet and maybe never will. And best of all , you accept them as their character. In short they are nothing like you have seen in a very very long time. And you can't blame all of it on practical effects and real locations , this is masterful direction and incredible acting !
I mean sure its impressive when Tom 'mission impossible' Cruise actually hangs on the side of a plain taking off... but you think : oh wow that's impressive, Tom Cruise is cool . You don't even care about whatever happens to his character or the impossible mission , He is Tom Cruise ! And Tom Cruise is a real life Gary Stu. Yes he is awesome , but that seems to be all there is.
With all due respect to Mr.Cruise: In this film simply running from a explosion is more exiting then the scene i just described !The music , the acting , the story , the pace , ITS JUST THE BEST THING EVER.
I have heard people that the characters relations are rushed. To them i say : OF COURSE THEY ARE ! That is what happens when you are in a rush do to being in mortal danger. You bond to people and try to stay alive ! I would make more new friends in a earth quake then on any normal day!
And you feel this rush throughout the film so you make these people your best friends ever who you would never want to part with , its a Action adventure movie not a physiological novel set in cosmopolitan new York.
Its a emotional roller coaster , its gripping , its fantastic , it has Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher , It has the best first film appearance I have ever seen in the incredible Daisy Ridley, IT HAS EPIC BATTLES! what more do you want ?
