I think this is one of the worst example of observational documentary. Director decide to sideline ethical questions and ignore how she became a harmful subjects for animal. I am sure if she decide to shoot something like that in US or Hong Kong she has to fill enormous of ethic forms to follow stray animals however she just went to a country in where no one cares about what she has done and how she affected a stray puppy's life. This is not a good documentary this is basically a piece about how you shouldn't abuse animals.
When a bird scares from you, you can feel the uneasiness... the fear surround its body and sound to protect itself. This movie is all about an unrest soul which has doubt about its identity. You may watch a lot of movie about self-discovering but this is a masterpiece. I am not only talking about the script or dialogue but the way that director shows contrast is clever. The one shot technique helps to bring all the dilemma and confusion with great acting but also I love how he exposes the audience by bringing them into the scene by leading actor's great look.
This movie can explain you how a gay struggling in a racist army. However while world moves apart you can only find the creation of a new world surrounded by beautiful songs, Canary's song.

This movie is a combination of lazy script writing with a good art direction. After 10 minutes you can easily start to think; am I watching a soap opera or a movie? From very beginning of this movie you have to deal with eye staring contest because according to director during 50's South Africa everybody communicated through their eyes.
This contest of course is not the only problem about this movie, I understood that he wanted to use caricature characters to describe fascist white people however when you combine this with a bad sound effects, which you can freely contrast batons' sounds with cartoons, the result becomes intolerable. Also director used the oldest trick in the book which is starting movie with the ending. When you evaluate this trick with the usage of timeline during the movie, it doesn't work. Even uneducated eyes can understand events don't follow each other. There is a constant error on synchronicity.
I am sure this country has lots of good and deep stories on racial issues from especially apartheid era but this movie is not the best example to bring those stories into life.
