I enjoyed the first two IKWYDLS, didn't bother with whatever the next stuff was, and had my interest revived with the return of Freddie Prinze Jr. And Jennifer Love Hewitt for this one.
A nice touch modernizing the romantic relationships and the very end was the freshest thing I'd seen in a slasher since the first Scream. I chuckled at deliberate retreads of familiar lines from the original.
Otherwise this unfortunately came across as not needing to be made. The young leads are competent but lacking the same charisma/chemistry as the original four. And there truly isn't enough justification for who the killer turns out to be.

It goes without saying that the original Twilight Zone was and will ever be the best of the bunch...
But this first reincarnation from the 1980s is worthy of its place in the canon. I was excited about it and watched it at the time but recalled and saw little of it since. I was therefore pleasantly surprised by its quality when I watched the series recently.
Besides the steady stream of faces once or about to be famous, overall the writing is solid and fitting for the Zone. I was particularly pleased to realize that familiar stories from the original weren't just remade but retold rather cunningly, modernizing and taking stories in new directions or just simply more compelling than the original - like the stopwatch one, nuff said!

Full disclosure: I am the chubby daughter of an overweight Italian American -- so perhaps I'm a bit biased because any good Italian knows FOOD IS LOVE and this mandate wars with any desire the perpetually overweight have to be thinner.
But the poor ratings puzzle me...
Perhaps other reviewers have it pegged, we live in an age where all sizes are supposedly acceptable and obese folks are more the norm so it's "wrong" to crack wise or uncomfortable about obesity.
Anyone who has dealt with weight issues will see the heart and truth in this movie, it in no way shames overweight people. And it offers the viewer a nice slice of NYC Italian American life with actors you can't help like.
