laura-dreamweaver's rating
I'm so frustrated by all of the hyperbolic reviews on IMDB these days; 1's & 10's are very rare in movies. This is neither. I'd give it a 6.75 but, I'm rounding up. We haven't had a decent new Christmas movie in a while and this is just that. The plot is sweet without being treacle. The acting and directing are good; not great. The ensemble chemistry is charming. And the script is predictable in the way we want our holiday movies to be. This isn't Love Actually but, it isn't Hallmark or Lifetime either. It is a nice movie that made me smile. If you like warm and fuzzy during the holidays, then this is for you.
Is this a great movie? No. Is it predictable? Yes. Did I somehow thoroughly enjoy it? Yes. I think there hasn't been a great romcom in years, so watching a decent one pulled my heartstrings. It was nice to watch an easy viewing movie with no political agenda and no self awareness. The quiet directing and acting was a pleasure. If you go in with low expectations you'll have a pleasant ride. Now, I have another 200 characters so, let me say this is a great film to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon, or on a flight, or when you're preoccupied, or when you need to just have an easy escapist couple of hours.
I struggled with rating this. I was between a 7 for story and an 8 for experiencing a movie going feeling I haven't had in years. I'm so happy I saw this at the theatre. It does not have as much charm and fun as the original. But, we are all in need of a popcorn big screen event and this delivers. You can tell there was a lot of effort put into the flight scenes which is why you should see it on the big screen. Tom Cruise is THE movie star of the last half century. They somehow made a war movie that stays away from any politics. The casting is great. The audience I saw it with on early access Tuesday made it fun. If you want an escape from the grueling topics of today, I highly recommend going to your local theater. I'd watch this by myself, on a date, or with the family. Go see it just don't set your expectations too high.
