The fact that these last two MI movies really don't make sense (The Entity as villain?!) aside, my problem here is that nothing really makes sense. It's best to ignore all the exposition. The airplane sequence? Frankly, I can't tell whether it's CGI or live action except that I've read Cruise did the stunts. I stepped out for a few minutes and really didn't make any difference when I returned. I still enjoy Simon Pegg, and I'm ready to vote for Angela Barrett as President as this is the second time I've seen her play the role. Anyway, I'm pretty much worn out by this series. The motorcycle stunt in the last one was first-rate, but nothing tops Cruise climbing Burj and that was years ago...
Any drama that requires unnamed, omniscient narrators to "explain" what is happening ought to be looked at with great suspicion. Imagine this story these several narrators telling us what the characters are thinking...I doubt we'd have the same impressions of their actions. At any rate, it's hard to articulate just how disappointing it is to see such a poorly-conceived and executed production from a film auteur whose previous work I have always admired. Almost laughably awful, but ultimately, there wasn't anything to laugh at. The "disclaimer" should have said, "Utterly fatuous and unbelievable. Don't waste your time."
I watched the whole thing. Turns out that the "mystery" isn't that interesting. What amuses and amazed me was that the producers made no effort to explain the technology at work that allowed for the kind of close monitoring of the suspects nor was there any explanation of how the kidnapers had the expertise and craft to interrupt world-wide communications at will. When I was a kid, I wrote a story about the Roman legions because I was fascinated by them. Did no research, offered no explanations for what was happening, just strung together a bunch events. That's how this story plays. Oddly, some of the performers were quite convincing (not Uma Thurman of course). The saving grace is that this appears to be a one-of--I can't imagine how there could be a season two...
