The Sweetwater Boxing Club

  • The darkly humorous side of boxing...The Sopranos in a boxing ring.

Saw this film at the Silk City flick Fest in Connecticut in October. It's really too bad a film like this isn't seen by more people. This would make a great one hour drama comedy. The writing is excellent--top notch, the direction is very good, the actors pulled it off beautifully and really represent what this kind of show would play like. This would make a great HBO one hour show and I wonder if the Sopranos started out this way. It really needs a look. Most people don't know what boxing is really like at this level-- the smaller gyms around the country, the intrigues, the deals, the dysfunction. I loved this world they'd developed. It drew me in. I wanted more. Very unique. I thought it was fantastic--

  • Fun independent film

This is a very cool and quite fun independent film. It's a good character-driven story about this one man who will do anything to keep his house. It's actually well-acted--the protagonist is excellent--, filled with drama--it takes place during a card game one afternoon in one house--and some real action--once the trouble begins it's fairly out of control--and it never lets up until the last second. Kind of dark, but in a way where you have to laugh. You can also tell at times that it wasn't made for a ton of money, but the writing is very--very--good and there are lots of truly great moments here. Clever, subtle humor. I highly recommend.

  • A very original slice of New Hampshire life and a truly "independent" film

This is a film that clearly requires a quiet, patient viewing. That's it. The story has many layers and you're not going to appreciate it if you're not fully involved. It has a nice, lyrical quality to it, it is beautifully photographed, it is paced really well, and the acting is good. The writing is very good too, and this is what we should expect from well-made, independents. These characters have an emotional life to them. The writing is not your typical "Hollywood" smash bang imitation. The story has a depth and a quality to it, and a very cool David Lynch element, that kept me intrigued. I thought it was great. It wasn't what I expected. Albeit a little quirky, the film all around has a dreamy sincerity to it and I love that in these kinds of films. The story is interesting, it evolves carefully, and well, and it makes sense! A rarity indeed.
