Abraham Polonsky's only directorial credit for over twenty years due to blacklisting is about an attorney for a numbers racket who starts trying to enrich himself. The basic gist behind "Force of Evil" is that, despite having defeated evil in World War II, we had a pretty evil system, with cheating being the only way to win.
John Garfield, a major star in the '40s, also ended up blacklisted and died prematurely, essentially erasing him from film history. That was all the more evil, since this is one of the most searing indictments of our economic system outside of Michael Moore's movies. I don't know how widely available it is, so you'll probably have to check a neighborhood video store.

I heard a lot about Wolfgang Becker's "Good Bye, Lenin!" when it got released, but only now got around to seeing it. In addition to the main plot, the movie acknowledges East Germany's unpleasant side, and what got lost when the country ceased to exist. There is in fact a phenomenon in Germany called Ostalgie, a portmanteau of Ost (east) and Nostalgie (nostalgia). Of course, the Oscar-winning movie "The Lives of Others" offered a much more cynical look at East Germany.
Anyway, a good look at the issue of creating an illusion, and whether or not we want to idealize the past.

The Naked Gun movies were one of the most iconic franchises of the past forty years, spoofing cop movies in the style of a Mel Brooks movie. Leslie Nielsen's Buster Keaton-like ability to keep a straight face amid complete silliness was going to be a hard act to follow.
Well, Liam Neeson has pulled it off. Not every joke in the 2025 version of "The Naked Gun" lands, but enough of the humor does so that it's an enjoyable movie (and Pamela Anderson remains a real babe). Let's hope a new round of wacky, unabashedly ridiculous comedies make a return to the big screen.
