Firstly, this is an old film so don't expect state of the art production, sound values etc as some reviewers have expected. This film is a warm ride through the past annals of Aussie film history. Mel Gibson's first true role, Steve Bisley in an emergent role...even Abigail, bless her sexy cotton socks makes an appearance. This film was the start of Producer, Phil Avalon's long career in indie film making and he's still doing it today! A sort of surf story wrapped around the road trip of four good friends, this one started a trend which has finally arrived at the point where surf movies are now big screen box office hits. So sure, the acting's not the best, production, direction and audio are poor for our 21st Century ears...but watch it and smile for a lot of talent was squeezed out of this little gem. And, I'd love to hear Chris Fraser's 'behind the scenes' story one day!!
A strong Aussie indie thriller that gives you a buzz spotting all the local landmarks around Sydney. For non Aussies, it's just great scenery. Strong feminine lead but the movie stands out as a platform for Simon Westaway to strut his stuff as a PI, taking on a case he really isn't too excited about. Interesting performance (albeit brief) from Paul Mercurio (Strictly Ballroom) in a baddie role. Look out as well for Rowena Wallace and yesterday's hero, Dieter Brummer (Home & Away). The soundtrack is strong, featuring Kevin Johhnson (for all those who can remember the 60/70's!! Another film from noted Sydney producer, Phil Avalon who among other things, introduced Mel Gibson to the silver screen a long time ago. Well planned, plotted and executed..and worth tracking down (excuse the pun!)
Train surfing...the opening sequence summons up memories of teenage thrills long past. A group of young thrill seekers, agree to meet again in 15 years and 'do it again'. A strong cast led by Australia's legendary Sigrid Thornton, delves into human psyche and dreams abandoned. Peter O'Brien also brings experience as the lonely farmer as the story opens up in to a form of psychological thriller. The stand out performance is from Robert Mammone who plays the 'is he dead or isn't he' character of Wilga. The final climactic scene aboard the train could have been stronger but given the limited budget, still manages to satisfy. An indie flick for sure but nonetheless provides a good 90 minutes of Aussie film making entertainment.
