Stop and think twice before renting or buying this film. Some movies have no replay value but this movie has no first viewing value. Shark footage appears to be taken from a number of shark special programs. When such footage isn't being used the worst fake shark you can image is used. Acting is a severe draw back also. Some of the actors obviously don't speak English or don't speak it well. Its not all the fault of the actors however there is a terrible script to work with that I'm sure was thrown together at the last minute. Special effects...well there aren't any! In short any novice film maker or any person off the street could make a better movie than this one. Stay clear of it.
Despite the bad reviews I decided to pick this movie up and it was interesting to say the least. Where it can't be deemed a "true horror movie" because of comic lines and acting (sometimes not intended I'm sure), this movie still has some merit. Acting and character depth are not its strong virtues and the special effects could never win any awards for sure. Coolio's role in the movie was funny and it was good to see Bill Moseley for once not hiding behind a ton of makeup. Adrienne Barbeau's character is over the top and drags the movie down somewhat. David Gunn's character will have you laughing as will Richard Trapp's character. The story idea is different and gets your attention. Instead of switching from horror film to horror/comedy throughout the movie, the movie would have been better served to be played out as a straight laced hard edged horror flick from start to finish. Despite its many flaws the movie is still worth picking up and watching. Just don't put your expectations too high.
Seeing the cover art and the fact Tony Todd was involved you would expect a better movie. The story is fairly good but combine bad acting and "terrible effects" and the movie loses all its steam. Die hard horror fans such as myself will be very disappointed with this movie. Very little blood, no real gore to speak of and a general lack of special effects leave the movie flat. Tony Todd gives a good performance but he alone can't save this movie. Nicole Kingston is a beauty to help dull the pain of watching this movie. This is another movie where the lack of a good budget hurts the movie to the point its almost a waste of time to have filmed it. If your looking for a hidden gem or a good scare pass on this one.
