Don't expect anything groundbreaking here; the creators played it safe by sticking to a well-established formula for animations aimed at young kids. And their strategy clearly paid off, with the film's global earnings recently surpassing $1 billion.

That said, despite its humongous box office success, I believe the movie could have excelled in several areas. For one, the sibling dynamic feels underdeveloped and doesn't evoke the emotional response I was hoping for.

Moreover, the supporting characters, aside from Lilo, Nani, and Stitch failed to make a lasting impression, owing primarily to their individual write-ups which came off as bland and generic.

It was really Stitch's vibrant personality and antics that kept me engaged; I found him irresistibly adorable.

Having closely observed Vishal Furia's body of work in horror, including "Chhorii" parts one and two, as well as his latest offering "Maa", I feel compelled to conclude that he may not be the ideal choice for supernatural dramas after all.

While he does demonstrate a natural ability to convey messages embedded at the core of the script, his vision and directorial approach seem to lack the nuanced understanding typically expected from a specified horror director.

"Maa" serves as a prime example of Furia's struggles in effectively harnessing the fundamental aspects of the genre. For instance, the scenes intended to evoke fear fail to elicit the expected responses, he also struggles to forge a deeper emotional connection with the characters and the causes they relentlessly fight for, not to mention the subpar visual effects and underdeveloped character arcs, which further negates any redeemable qualities found in the overarching execution.

It is important not to misconstrue the film as a straightforward horror production, it has been envisioned more as a drama, incorporating elements of the supernatural alongside significant themes that dares to intertwine heavy themes such as politics and war with a coming-of-age narrative at its heart.

While the film undeniably showcases ambition, the exploration of these themes lacks the depth many would expect, and that's primarily because of the storytelling which leans towards a lighter tone, specifically made for a younger set of adolescent audience.

As a result, though their intentions are thoughtfully formulated, the script ultimately conveys a somewhat amateurish, "juvenile" sentiment.
