This movie left me chilled to the bone. I have seen documentaries about wrongful convictions and eyewitness errors but never have I seen such a lynching. The most jaw dropping moment was an interview with the defense attorney who did not present a case and didn't even know that he could have asked for money from the state to do an investigation. He did no investigation. He has a look of sympathy and ignorance and guilt that is shocking. His confession can only be surmised as a request for forgiveness in order to make peace with his soul. The mother recounts the details of the arrest of her son and the fear and disbelief is displayed with a helplessness that is heartbreaking. The boy is 17 and considered "retarded" and a past that would explain severe trauma but not violence. The attorneys, police and the judges seem comfortable to circumvent the law and I am reminded of a line from the Denzel Washington movie, "Hurricane." The Police stopped and told him,"We're looking for two negroes in a white car." Hurricane responded, "Any two will do? The injustice becomes unbelievable and the director effectively invokes a feeling that something evil and unholy is going on. Religion is used as an important theme with the Catholic Church fighting for clemency and religious fanatics hell bent on the electric chair, each one claiming to be in Jesus Camp. Good and evil fighting for the soul and who does God side with?
The injustice and incompetence will have you on the edge of your bed and then you find out that something evil and unholy IS going on. The execution isn't the final blow.

Simply one of the best movies I have seen this year. I confess that I originally watched this to see the performance of Ryan Kwanten and see how he matched up to Jason from True Blood. It was shocking to see how good of an actor he is. He is not even recognizable as the same sex starved idiot hunk. He plays a true gentleman that is an inspiration. His sweetness and dedication and honesty are truly rare and thrown into a completely corrupt environment, comes out as an amazing hero. The suspense and action will have you at the edge of your seat. The way he protects his wife, who is pregnant is a pure joy to watch. I watched this late at night thinking it would help me fall asleep with what I guessed would be a lot of bad acting and a shoddy script and ended up staying up to watch and watched it again the next day. The humor that comes out as the villain scares the townspeople to death is pure entertainment. The acting is superb from all and I was completely entertained. Watch this movie.
The problem with the complaints about this movie is they are all centered on making fun of conspiracy theories which is exactly what the corporations want you to believe. This is brought out effectively in the movie but the reviewers who want more sex and violence are not mature enough for this subject. Corporations who are obliged and required by their bylaws to make money don't want to kill you but collateral damage is to be expected. Haven't we learned from BP oil spills, made up wars for oil and Halliburton and the billions of lobbyist money that goes to buy Congressmen, judges and Presidents that there is more to this than you think. "Cuting corners with people's lives, how could you let that happen?" "Unbelievable." It is not your government that you should fear, but the people who make fun of Government by saying things like the nine scariest words in the English language are "I'm from the government and I'm here to help." Those people are bought off by the corporations. The government IS here to help but when Corporations infiltrate the government and prop up actors and buffoons to make you think everything is a big conspiracy, what they mean is its all a joke, nothing to see here move along.
This is a great movie and they do even have a little romance for those who can only handle sex and violence.
