Obviously, this is what inspired Encino Man, then in turn inspired Blast From The Past, these two latter I haven't seen. Most of the jokes keep missing and Mandel's outlandish antics, and childish behavior is just stupid to watch. The film does have heart, and Amy Steele turns in a really good performance, where Lloyd is at his brilliant nastiness, as Mandel's heartless scheming brother. But most of the jokes just weren't there, and I do see where it could of been funnier. Mandel too in adopting and learning human habits, and how he responds, didn't make sense either in parts. Wretched film wastes a whole good cast, and that's sad, but trying to take this for laughs, is also sad.
Don't you hate it when good actors are cast in bad films. Noted, this is how I felt at the start, as in regards to my bad remark. This film really gets better. It's fun watching Sly's brother, who I consider a better actor, walk the jail cell room, delivering verbal insults to all his prison colleagues. I FOUND IT HILARIOUS. Even Eddie Mr Blue Bunker is amongst these animals, and tries to get fresh with a cherry baby faced prisoner. Then take a family foursome, who are not the happiest a the moment, with wifie Lenz, who has a great job offering in another city, take off in their RV and cross deadly paths with a bunch of these same brutal convicts, who have escaped a crashing bus, while being transported to Penitentiaryville. Now put a classic spin on this story, with one of these escaping prisoners, being a Vietnam vet, who still thinks he's in Vietnam. This shock angle really gives the film some real claustrophobic tense moments. Hubby DeYoung, also has war fighting and survival skills. Very entertaining B grader with a very cute daughter too, and likeable son, in a not without flaws action thriller. Stallone's time in this film though, is very engaging in watching a very underrated performer wonderful perform his brawn.
Totally open mouthed to the bad reviews on this one. For starters we have a kickarse lead and a really good backstory. This is a smarter werewolf movie. Heightened by great night visuals and the wolves themselves are awesome to look at. We have great characters to vouch for, and Lou Diamond''s small scenes are another plus. This is very original and fresh, it's 2 criticism's, the movie being too short, the other one of course, being the blue strobing in many scenes going across the top and bottom, but does give color to the great 'feel your there' atmosphere. Forget the haters. Make up your mind. You may very well impressed, and engrossed.
