The illusion of men, false hope, unforgiving nature, man vs nature.. There are many ways to describe and categorize Aguirre, The Wrath of God. In the search for wealth and fortune, fame and power.. one can lose themself.. Men controlled and obsessed with the idea of achievement of discovery, only to be crushed under the reality of nature. "But I am also sorry for you because I know there is no escape from this jungle". I can't help but to think of the great silent documentary The Great White Silence (1924), about the Terra Nova Expedition to the south pole. Or Solo (2008), which documents the failed attempt of Andrew McAuley who attempted to kayak from Tasmania to New Zealand. The difference between those films and Aguirre is that Aguirre is fiction from the mind of director Werner Herzog. It doesn't matter that its fiction though since the film has real truth.
Its a human truth and a human story, about our place and relationship to nature. The difference between the Indians and the Spanish explorers, is that the Indians are one with nature. They live within nature, surviving off the land itself. The conquistadors are fighting against it. These men have in a sense evolved out of nature and into towns, cities.. They are not accustomed to the raw elements of nature as the Indians. They try to spread the word of their Christian belief, without the realization that the Indians do not live in that world.. They do not come from a society of organized religion.
The conquistadors try to control everything around them.. their slaves, the Indians, themselves.. Aguirre himself proclaims the birds shall drop dead from the trees if he wishes. He thinks the earth fears him and quakes under his feet. One thing they cannot control is the wrath of nature. Nature has no concern about the rule of men or their beliefs. The "enemy" is rarely seen, some moments an arrow quickly hits someone without a sound, almost no one noticing.. As if nature itself was picking these men off one by one.
.. "Thou lettest man flow on like a river and thy years know no end. As for man, his days are like grass as a flower on the field, so he blossoms. For when the wind passeth over it and it is gone, and the place thereof shall know it no more."
According to director Werner Herzog, one night Klaus Kinski was attempting to sleep but was kept awake by the loud extras playing cards in a hut. Klaus picked up his winchester rifle and fired three bullets into the wall of the hut. There were 45 extras crammed together in the hut, not one of them killed but one had the tip of their finger shot off.
