So, I get the concept of the story and love a good scam artist story, but Apple CIDER vinegar is a really bad example of how to tell one of these stories.
I think enjoying this show depends heavily on you already having an understanding of the Belle Gibson story. As someone from the UK who had never heard of her before I saw this show on Netflix, I got 2.5 episodes in and still didn't fully understand exactly what Belle did or how she did it. This was when I gave up on the show.
The show jumps between time lines, making it incredibly difficult to actually follow the story. You see the same scene play out multiple times, I'm presuming it's supposed to be with different context each time, but I'm not sure.
You shouldn't have to work this hard to try and understand what appears to be a relatively simple story.
The overall look and feel of the show was great and the cast stellar. Sadly, the storytelling didn't work. I'm now going to google Belle's name to actually find out the story and save myself 3.5 more episodes of pain.

From the same people who bought you Superstore, you can see some of the same vibe, however, they've clearly been influenced by the success of Abbott Elementary too, but St Denis Medical doesn't managed to capture the magic of either of those shows.
Not a single one of the core characters is likeable. Even a flawed character needs to have some connection to the audience and that isn't what I'm getting from this show.
Wendi-McClendon-Covey has just bought Beverly Goldberg into the 2020s in this role, the two characters are 100% interchangeable.
It's an easy background watch, but it is just lacking something to make it truly magical.

Firstly, almost every negative review of this show comes from people who are comparing it to the 80s/90s show of the same name. This show is NOT a remake or spin-off of this show... it's not even "inspired by" the old show Matlock.
I can't explain any more without spoilers, so, go into this show with fresh eyes.
It's an interesting premise -seeing a woman in her 70s return to the workforce, playing on the way people ignore or underestimate the elderly to get into places and obtain information that other people would struggle with.
The show starts off making you think it's a lighthearted legal procedural drama/comedy, but quickly reveals itself to be quite different with an engaging story threading through the series. By episode 15 I was 100% obsessed by the series story rather than the weekly stories and couldn't wait to watch the next episode.
There's a lot of clever writing, really interesting story set-ups and seeding of stories that come to fruition in later episode. They also use bait-and-switch storytelling to great effect, keeping the viewer on their toes.
And what a cast. Kathy Bates is just stellar and I couldn't imagine anyone else being able to bring Matty to life like her. The supporting cast are all perfect for their roles.
