  • Wonderful Family Movie

I remember being fascinated by this movie when I saw it on Disney as a kid, and still have very fond memories of it some 30 years down the track.

Based on the novel The Ghost Belonged to Me by Richard Peck, Child of Glass is an excellent family movie that is just scary enough to keep the kids on the edge of their seats, but not so scary that it will give them nightmares. Although it strays from the novel's turn of the century setting, the basic plot remains the same and the relationship that is built up between the ghostly Inez and the very much alive Alexander is what drives this atmospheric tale, and I still remember being enthralled by the climactic ending.

I certainly hope Disney sees fit to release this on DVD very soon, as it is sure to be a hit with both kids and adults alike.

  • Don't waste your time

I only watched this film because of Callum Keith Rennie, but even his presence wasn't enough to hold my interest in this very routine 'thriller', a title it is hardly worthy of.

The acting is mostly wooden, the 'villain' a total caricature, and the ending completely predictable. Nicole Eggert does what she can, but she doesn't have the acting chops to rise above such a mediocre script. Timothy Bottoms veers wildly between gnawing on the scenery and obvious disinterest, while Callum tries hard to begin with, but by the end even he looks like he's wondering how to get the hell out of there.

My advice; don't waste your time. There are much better movies out there than this. Go watch one of those.

  • Soap without suds

With it's convoluted plot and cardboard characters, XXX's & OOO's is little more than a cliched soap opera.

A tale of four wronged women, each connected to the Nashville country music scene, XXX's & OOO's uses all the standard soapie devices to get it's point across. There's birth and death, marriage and divorce. There's corporate shenanigans and blackmail, alcoholism, wayward children and controlling parents. There's the woman making it in the mans' world, a court case, a rousing church ceremony, a grand opening and even a car crash. All of it, however, amounts to very little.

I rented this movie because I'm a fan of Paul Gross (due South) and although he looks pretty and gets to sing, even his presence wasn't enough to keep me interested. The flashback sequences are little more than cringe-worthy music videos, the characters aren't at all engaging and I could see every plot twist a turn a mile before it happened. I found myself hitting the fast-forward button on more than one occasion and still managed to keep up with the various plot threads.

If you have an interest in country music it might be worth a look. Otherwise, don't bother.
