My first CD-player was actually a Playstation 1, it was a revolutionary console in many ways, and one of the games I played a lot of was Twisted Metal. You could shoot the statue of liberty and it'd reveal her wearing a bikini and dumb silly juvenile stuff like that, so that's sort of what I expected of this TV show, to keep that silly tone, and they totally delivered.
I didn't keep up with the sequels to the first game, so maybe there was some story fleshed out I'm not aware of, but from my point of view I had absolutely no idea how they'd create a story from a game like Twisted Metal where all you do is shoot at each other and blow stuff up, but they actually created such a fun and original universe that is very believable.
Season 1 is all about getting to know our protagonists sometimes explaining through flashbacks how the world turned into the dystopia it is in the show.
Season 2 is setting up the grand tournament known as Twisted Metal and we get to meet some new characters one of which I was really happy to see from the game: Axel. Many other characters are fleshed out and they're all likable and sympathetic to some degree, but there is also a bit of filler which takes my score down a bit.
And then there's the surprising climax which leaves the show open for another season - which I wouldn't be against! I could even see myself up the score to an 8 which is for shows I deem rewatchable if season 3 improves on the story, because by the end of season 2 I was really invested into the remaining characters.
The way they used music in this show was really well done. In season 1 episode 8 they use Evanescene's song "My Immortal" which is a real tearjerker for the scene it's used. There's plenty of other great songs used throughout the show.
Final thoughts: Because I also played Carmageddon back in the 90s when I also played Twisted Metal, I was sort of mixing them together a bit, or at least, I was really hoping we'd gotten to hear some heavier songs in Twisted Metal, especially something like the song "Zero Signal"from "Fear Factory" as that is used in Carmageddon - it would've fit perfectly with Twisted Metal as well.
