  • Good and spectacular follow-up with impressive visual effects.

"Kingdom of the planet of apes" 2024 is an exciting and intense movie with stunning FX by means of Motion Capture technology. In a world ruled by apes, a young chimpanzee called Noa (Owen Teague) embarks on a journey to save his clan after a devastating attack. He allies with a human named Mae (Freya Allan), who shares his desire to break free from the apes' opressive regime. Together they navigate treacherous and dangerous landscape of ape and human conflict, ultimately leading a rebellion against ape chief Proximus (Kevin Durand) who's supported by the cunning human Trevathan (William H. Macy). As the dust settles, Noa and Mae contemplate the future of both species, uncertain of whether peaceful coexistence is possible. Here Noa wrestles with his darker instincts and starts his own mythic quest to rescue his tribe and family that is being submitted in slavery and apartheid.

A new entry set many years later the conclusion of 2017' War for the planet of Apes, in which apes communities have grown from when Caesar -Andy Serkis- brought his followers to an oasis, while humans have been submitted to a feral-like existence. The film deals with conflicts between apes and human in which our main protagonists will have to make choices that will define their races alike. Writing credits by Richard Jaffa and Amanda Silver, their screenplay is just clever and including interesting issues about human beings and animals. Similar the previous films, this is a Simian movie to have CGI apes with arm extensions. Starring Owen Teague and Freya Allan are pretty well, but they're unknown for general public, I miss famous actors; however, it is made up for the more known players, William H. Macy and Kevin Durand. Remaining cast formed by Gorilla, Chimpanzees, Orangutans and other simians are fine, in spite of overlong scenes in 'Motion Capture' they are still nicely and compellingly made. The picture was well produced/directed by Wes Ball who previouly made the successful trilogy, "The maze runner".

Leaving aside the classic films in the 60s and 70s, (Planet of apes, Beneath of the planet of the apes, Escape of planet of apes, Conquest and Battle for the planet of the apes), based on Pierre Boulle novel, usually directed by Franklyn J. Schaffner, Ted Post, Don Taylor, J. Lee Thompson and starred by Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, James Franciscus, Linda Harrison, Natalie Trundy, in 2011 was made a reboot under the technical of Motion picture: "Rise of the planet of apes" , 2011, directed by Rupert Wyatt, starring James Franco, Freida Pinto , Andy Serkis as Caesar. This was followed by " Dawn of the planet of apes" , 2014, by Matt Reeves with Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Toby Kebbell, Kirk Acevedo; "War of the planet of apes" , 2017, by Matt Reeves with Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Ty Olsson and " Kingdom of the planet of apes", 2024.

  • Third installment with lots of frenetic action, shootous, fights and violence.

Second sequel to successful Paul Verhoeven' Robocop 1989, a stylish cop thriller with a prophetic vision of the future, Omni Consumer Product Corporation led by a villain CEO (Rip Torn) are now in uneasy alliance with the Japanese multi, led by Kanemitsu chief (Mako). In the futuriristc old Detroit, the crime rates are soaring with several criminal bands. Debts and permanent crisis have forced them into an ambitious city-building project, Delta, which requires the cleaing of the remaining city-centre communities of Detroit. Meanwhile, guerrilla gangs make life hard for underground hippie-like groups. When RoboCop (Robert Burke who substitutes Peter Weller) finds himself in loco parentis to kid Nikko (Ryan), he also finds his loyalties and martial arts skills siding with the homeless. When the inhabitants fight back, RoboCop sides with the resistance and faces battle with a Japanese Terminator.

This follow-up blends frantic action, crossfire, comic-strip and intrigue, but it results to be violent, vile, disagreeable and very funny as well. The pace is breakneck, and when the wit does run out, way-out weaponry and whole-scale destruction keep the appalled excitement burning. There's much violence, if less violent than the former two movies , but with some secondary actors overplaying in the cast. There are ironical elements, as well as disturbingly violent in a way which is more manipulative than gory. Fred Deckker's third entry also comes third in terms of merit. In tune with the times, the techno-violence here is tempered with appeal to family values, though there are also loads of violence. The familiarity of the high-armour shootouts and FX assisted set-pieces make most of this follow-up feel surprisingly low-tech. Notable musical score by Basil Poledouris deserves something with more depth to go with it. The motion picture was unevenly directed by Sci-fi and terror expert Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad, Night of the Creeps).

Robocop trilogy is made up of: "Robocop" 1989, by Paul Verhoeven with Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer. "RoboCop 2" , 1990, by Irvin Kershner stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Belinda Bauer, Daniel O'Herlihy, Tom Noonan, Felton Perry, Patricia Charbonneau. "RoboCop 3:, 1992, by Fred Dekker with Robert Burke, Nancy Allen, Rip Torn, John Castle, Jill Hennessy, CCH Pounder, Mako. And a reboot "RoboCop", 2014, by José Padilla stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jennifer Ehle.

  • A routine police drama with good cast, but with weak filmmaking.

Lawson Russell (Cuba Gooding Jr), a prestigious attorney at law, flouts procedural rules while defending his own client (Eric Stolz) accused for murder. He is disbarred and decides to retire to Florida to write a book. He happens to meet an elderly man who lets him read his own murder mystery manuscript. But his task proves so complicated that he opts to plagiarize the novel of the recently deceased author, who unexpectedly dies. The book narrates itself a series of supposedly fictional murders. After its publication, the book, titled 'Crow's nest', becomes a publishing success promoted by an ambitious editor (Ashley Laurence). Relentlesly, a Police Detective (Tom Berenguer) pursues Russell upon learning that the crimes in the book turn out be real, making Lawson the prime suspect since the killings are well described in the novel's narrative. The detective thinks that since Russell knows so much about the crimes, he must be the killer.

A conventional movie about lawyers, police officers, and murderous intrigue. Somewhat poor and weak plot, though acceptably entertaining, it's not hard to ask for too much. A twisted plot with unexpected story turns, in which a successful lawyer becomes the prime suspect in multiple murders. He then undertakes a first-hand investigation to prove his innocence and find the real culprit, taking justice into his own hands, acting as judge, jury and executioner. Starring is Cuba Gooding Jr, who was at the height of his fame, that's why he recently won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (Jerry McGuire), here giving a regular performance in his usual style. His opposite nemesis results to be Tom Berenguer as the stubborn cop who is constantly on his trail. Other supporting actors, more or less known for the general public, deliver functional interpretations, such as: Marianne Jean-Baptiste as the lawyer friend of our protagonist; Ashley Laurence as the novel's editor who has an affaire with Cuba; Eric Stolz as a yuppie suspected of the crime; Mark Pellegrino as a drama teacher; and Carmen Argenziano as the tough, recurrent Judge Banning.

This standard crime film was mediocrely written/directed by filmmaker Rowdy Herrington. This director is a craftsman who has worked in both film and television. Achieving some cinematic successes, his films include: "The stickup" (2001), "Striking distance" (1993), "Jack's back" (1987), and his big hit was "Roadhouse" (1999) stars Patrick Swayze. "Crow's nest" score: 5.5/10. Recommended only for fans of Tom Berenguer and Cuba Gooding Jr., and enthusiasts of unpretencious crime movies.
