  • A samurai film wonderfully driven by characters.

Unexpectedly, I found this film incredibly moving. The performances were nothing short of spectacular. The story which takes place during th end of the samurai era is interesting enough to keep most viewers pleased. The main focus however is on the characters and how they embody the spirit of the samurai through both negative and positive roles. The sheer amount of love and emotion they have for each other and for their beliefs is enough to get any viewer choked up. You'll find yourself questioning the motives quite a bit at the beginning of the film, but as the story progresses and as more is revealed, you'll begin to see just how wonderful and strong these people are.

  • It's not that bad once it gets rolling.

Forget the fact that most of this film is implausible. Forget the fact that all the characters are typical and can be seen in any other Korean comedy. Forget the fact that their personliaties are inconsistent throughout the film. And forget the fact that you're probably paying money one way or another to watch this. Once the movie gets going it really isn't that bad. Laughs are few and far in between at first but you might be pleasantly surprised if you manage to stay with it. When the story came together and the hysteria turned up a notch, I developed an appreciation for the characters because their frantic behaviour started to fit in. I wouldn't want them any other way. If you're not too picky Gwangbokjeol teuksa can make you laugh. Hey, you might end up enjoying it.
