  • Do androids dream of electric sheep?

"Phantasms" is an episode about dreams and symbolism - specifically Data's. He's having nightmares for the first time and it's interfering with his daily life, even compelling him to stab a fellow officer. Data claims to be seeing unsettling images from his dreams while he's awake, which baffles the crew. The dream imagery is well-done, and the way the A and B stories connect at the end is neat.

This is not the most scientifically plausible episode, nor does it have a powerful thematic message. But "Phantasms" is a fun mystery with some truly great moments.

  • How could they mess up this badly?

There is one good thing about this film and it's the kills. If you're just looking for gore and graphic murders, this movie delivers. If you're looking for anything beyond that, you're out of luck.

There's no characterization, no suspense, and no story. The plot of the film is basically: Michael Myers kills a lot of people while Laurie Strode lays in a hospital bed for 90 minutes and occasionally other characters do stupid things. The subplot with the escaped inmate was pointless; Tommy Doyle was an awful character; the mob justice motif was poorly handled. It was a complete mess.

Halloween 2018 was a breath of fresh air for the franchise. Kills is just another bad Halloween sequel.

  • Rides the line between masterful suspense and hilarious schlock.

Malignant is a very well-made film. It's James Wan, that shouldn't be a surprise. He's an expert in executing effective jump scares and tense thriller sequences, and this movie is no exception. It also boasts impressive visuals and morbid creativity that has been lacking in recent Wan films.

When the mystery unravels, that's when the tone blurs. It's such an outrageous twist that has to be seen to be believed. But it's played completely straight, so it manages to feel farcical yet genuinely grotesque.

Whether you come away thinking it's horrifying or hilarious, horror fans are sure to find some enjoyment in Malignant.
