Elizabeth David: A Life in Recipes

  • Viewing?

Where can this film be seen? Has it been broadcast on TV? I have several of David's books and also have M.F.K. Fisher. Both their writings are far more than just cooking. They both incorporate a life's philosophy in their literature. I have also found material on the Internet which compares these two women and their works. An ideal at this time after a release date of two years ago, would be perhaps a PBS broadcast of the film. I would be interested in any information about being able to view this film. Catherine McCormack was absolutely outstanding in Braveheart. I understand though that her true passion is the stage. Would love the opportunity to see what she did with the complex character of Elizabeth David.

  • Different Actress Spoiled It!

From first seeing this third movie, I have been intensely disappointed at the replacement of January Jones. She was perfect as the older Missy, whose younger version was definitely not a Miss Goodie-Goodie. Jones matched the younger Missy's personality very well. Her replacement seems larger, not delicate, too smiley and forced perky and is not a good match for Willie. I liked the ranch hands much better than I did Missy. I haven't read the books. The first two movies made me interested in reading them. If I had seen just this one, I don't think I would have that interest. After reading some of the other viewer's comments, I want to read the books to see if they really are better than the movie plots. Little House is an American legend, but those who read Laura's books, know that Michael Landon took considerable dramatic license with his stories as the show progressed.

  • Very original; not a 'knock-off' of "Walk-About"!

This movie about the struggles of these young people in a hostile environment, not knowing who to trust, and learning to know and trust themselves and each other, truly touched me. I have the tape and it is one that I enjoy watching again and again. Several observers have indicated that "A Far Off Place" is a poor re-make of the Australian-set "Walk-About". If they had paid attention to the writing credits, they would have found that "Walk-About" was based on the novel of the same name by James Vance Marshall. "A Far Off Place" is based on two novels by Laurens van der Post: "A Story of the Wind" and "A Far Off Place". Van der Post was by far the more acclaimed author. Several reviewers of both movies have commented on the animal death scenes. In this movie, in the Kalahari, the unanswered question I have wondered about is; what happened to Nonni's dog?
