Being a fan of the book and the miniseries from back in the day I was just expecting more from this. You would figure that a remake of this series today would have been much better if they would have just kept things decently the same from a format perspective. But this one seems to just miss the mark. I don't know what I was expecting but I was disappointed with this Amazon adaptation. The new Stand is definitely not complete trash but I'm not sure I will ever watch it again. The opposite of the original miniseries which I have seen multiple times over the years. I think the casting may have a big part of this but I can't say for sure.
Except for the iconic music this new Unsolved Mysteries is nowhere near the same vibe as the original. But it is still a good show. I understand their reasons for not wanting a narrator to pay respect to Stack but without one the show just feels different. But it's still pretty good. High production values definitely elevate the show and the topics, although mostly nothing new are interestingly handled. In a galaxy of these shows coming out of the woodwork this one definitely sits on top of the pile and is vastly superior to many of the shows in this category. Ex: Weird or What, Ancient Aliens, etc.
I swear I've seen about 30 of these same shows before with a wide range of production values. This one is kind of fun and even decently captivating at times due to some of the flamboyant guests and some interesting story layers within the episodes. I found the idea that some of the guests are just regular people giving their opinions a good one. It adds some unpolished depth to the topics. If you are reading this, then there is a good chance you've seen lots of other shows like this, and it is more of the same with a couple of fresh ideas and topics. The real plus side is Spectral Shadows often goes into multiple stories within stories. Histories and such. Standout episodes for me were the ones on Japanese horror and Cryptids.
