Despite being a comedy "So I'm a Spider" is no farce. It takes its characters and its world seriously.
The setup is standard Isekai. A high school classroom randomly explodes killing everyone and reincarnating them into another world.
It takes the more interesting route of reincarnating everyone as babies, memory intact, and then having them grow up in their new world. And it does a good job with this. It's one of the few Isekia's that does a Trans character correctly. And most of the side characters have something going on.
The main character's arc is based on "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime." Only it sticks with spider theme throughout the show rather than quickly allowing the MC to take human form.
However, it twists so much it gets tangled into knots. The main plot is hard to make sense of and heavily relies on withholding information from the viewer. By the end, if you stop to think about it, you see too many plot holes to ignore. Most are of the "it didn't make sense for that person to have taken that action" variety.
Eventually, I stopped trusting the show, which was a shame. That and it's a little battle heavy at times. But it's nice to see someone actually trying to make serious show with a consistent world, and it's a bonus that it's also a comedy.

The best thing I can say about this movie is that it goes a different direction in horror, and in that way it's experimental.
The problem is that the experiment failed.
Franco (the director) sets it up as a drama, rather than giving us the standard horror movie preamble, and that at least lets some of the actors shine.
The problem is that it's a drama that gets cut short by a horror movie, without any satisfying conclusions, and in some cases ham-fisted setups.
It's designed as a "slow burn" movie, but the fire goes out about halfway through.
While the actors do their best with an uninspiring script, the characters just aren't likable.
To be fair, it is realistic. So if you want to watch a horror movie that could actually happen, here you go.

A story about a merchant who finds himself bound to a wolf harvest goddess, Spice and Wolf is a grown-up anime on par with Frieren.
It has the will-they/won't-they vibe that's core to most rom-coms, but it's treated a little differently here. They have the problem that Holo, the goddess, is immortal (or at least very long lived) while Lawrence (the merchant) isn't.
Add to that, that it's left a little ambiguous as to if Holo's feelings are the effect of her being bound to him, along with Lawrence's own emotional reservations, and you have the makings of a complex relationship arc.
It can get side tracked on trade from time to time, as wheeling and dealing is its stand in for fantasy violence.
And I'd take any comparison with the original series with a grain of salt. I watched most of the new one, then went back and watched a few episodes of the old one, and I felt like the new one was slightly better.
I will say I'm a fan of the English dub. To me the original Japanese sounds a bit caricatured (Lawrence sounds too generic, and Holo sounds too young).
