X tries hard to channel the gritty charm of late-70s exploitation cinema, but the result feels more like a hollow cosplay than a loving homage. The film leans on shock value and shallow nostalgia, yet forgets to build tension or believable characters. A few stylish shots can't save a script that drags and relies on clichés. What could have been campy fun ends up tedious and disappointing.
Beautifully shot with a calm, reflective mood, Columbus has strong performances and some touching moments. Unfortunately it is very slow and often feels like it's barely moving. Long silences and lingering shots make the architecture more interesting than the story. It's nice to look at and thoughtful at times, but it seriously tests your patience. A decent mood piece, just not very engaging overall.
The scenario is smart and surprisingly emotional, using the double's identity to explore power, fear, and loyalty in a very human way. Kurosawa's direction is calm and precise, letting the story breathe without rushing. It's slow at times, but intentional-and the payoff is worth it. A thoughtful, haunting film that stays with you.
