The setup of the movie was pretty standard and solid, a spider being introduced into a place where it shouldn't be. At some point, too many different narrative strands appear and make it overloaded. It's not "confusing" as some say, just too much. We have the theme of anti-immigration, the friendship between the main character and one of the guys, the love relationship, the quarantine, and as a main course the spider infestation. It tried to be creepy, gory, thrilly, spooky, crawly but someone none of these worked really well. Being in dark settings is interesting in movies like Descent or Blair Witch or Sinister, but here it was "meh". There was no real gorey scene (which some might like) but I felt that at least one ultra-violent scene was missing, since we're doing horror. The drama and super-wailey death scene in the middle took out some acceleration, which is like, fine, but it's a strange mix. I'm not even saying it's unrealistic, but it felt like a weird choice to me. The finale in the garage was also over the top, as the cops are shooting for a good 15 min and the general chaos comes a bit out of nowhere. Why do the main characters live that long? Why did the guy who sacrifieced himself act this stupid (sure, it's a horror genre stable) and let in the spiders on everyone? What was the weird moment where the spider didn't do anything to the main character before they left the garage? Why is the house quarantined in this fascistic kind of way? Sure, I see the 'social commentary' but while I agree with the metaphor, it didn't really fly for me.
Also, too much spider sound effects that seem not real.
