Poor Sharadbabu must be feeling restless in heaven after watching this film.Chandramukhi and Paro dancing together - // e Ki holo babu moshay //.Paro a village orthodox girl Dancing with a Dancing girl. ! my god. And Devdas going to England ? All characters are caricatures of Sharadbabu's story. Shahrukhkhan as Devadas tries to copy Dilipkumar in every frame of the film and fails miserably. This picture is example of total mis-cast..Dilipkumar was already established as an actor of tragedy roles, Vayjayntimala was dancer No.1 of the industry and Suchitra sen was an established actress of repute from Bengal..While in devdas 2002 Shahrukhkhan was a popular playboy of the screen playing the hero, MadhuriDixit ,Contrary to demand of character of Chandramukhi is a 'dhakdhak' girl ( The story shows Chandramukhi to be a religious lady and Vayjayantimala fits role to a T - while Madhuiri looks cheap) and Aishwriya- though very beautiful could never match the grace and dignity of Schitra sen. Motilal ( a meverik and handsome star ) as chunnibabu was superb while Jackie made a mess of that role.The lyrical depiction of story by Bimal Rooy - a man trained in highest traditions of the film making at New Theaters of Calcutta.A man who had studied and digested Bengal culture.He wrote a poetry on celluloid . The extravaganza of modern Devdas though touted as its plus point is actually a weakness of the film.A fifty thousand rupees ghahghara was out of place in this film. ( I will not be surprised if some day Sanjay Leela Bhansali shows Rama wearing woolen Suit, Laxman talking to him on Mobile and Sita wearing Tshirt and Jeans) another feature of the film Music falls short of the expectations of viewers ( listeners ) SDBurman could incorporate Bengal culture by his soulful tunes. The black and white photography of earlier version brought about shades of light and darkness so appropriate to the film.In the name of liberty of expression to creator of film from book Sanjay has killed the soul of the book.( If Sharadbabu was alive he would have filed a suit of defamation or at least demanded deletion of his name as writer ). This happened with Devananad's Guide , wherein he had changed the locale but the film was beautifully made.

Devdas is a blur on the name of Film and deserves to be forgotten as a misadventure of an overambititous but tactless film maker.

Kanku's husband is dead and lone handedly she tries to bring up her son. A life of widow in Gujarat or in any part of India is difficulty, sad and depressingly pitiful. She has to wear black clothes , no ornaments- the day she becomes widow her bangles are broken and the red mark on forehead is wiped off. The irony is this red mark is known "Chandlo" and is made with Kanku., The name of the hero pin of the Film.A trader of the village played by Kishor wants to have sexual relations with her and is trying to woo her by helping her.The film was directed by Kantilal Rathod.

Generally the films in Gujarati are theatrical , melodramatic and unnatural but this film had natural flair about it.It is commentary of Society .Maybe that is the reason why film flopped.
