This film is a visual masterpiece of ingenuity, technical superiority and amazing special effects without the use of CGI or computer graphics! It was made in 1968 in the MGM studios, Borehamwood, Herts, and I consider it the greatest space exploration cinematic film ever made. It even surpasses 'Gravity' and 'Interstellar' which were made 50 years later and had CGI computer graphics to enhance their cinematography!. The music of 'The Blue Danube' by Strauss is captivating as you see them hurtling through space and spinning on their axis to the music! The existence of a computer on board named HAL is awesome and it controls everything in the spacecraft and also talks to the crew and monitors their every move. The climax is incredible when they try to switch of HAL and it knows what is happening so prevents it being shut down and immobilized. The crew eventually override HAL and manage to shut it down by going deep into the labyrinth of the ships service tunnels containing the myriad of computer memory discs which they disconnect and close HAL down. The visual special effects are stunning and the voyage to Jupiter through the vast vacuum of space is a spectacular array of visual and colourful superior imagery. In conclusion this film is the greatest space exploration movie ever made!
