Ceddo is one of the first films to come out of Africa (it was promptly banned in Senegal). It contains both subtle and not-so-subtle political messages in the conversations of characters fighting to keep their traditional way of life. The film holds a wealth of information that the casual eye might not catch. Linguists and other language buffs will enjoy the form and styles of speech (no one speaks directly to those of higher class, a major form of communicating ideas is to use metaphorical sayings, etc.). Those fascinated by culture will notice the myriad customs that might go unnoticed to other viewers. It is a film of revolt! Highly recomended.

Hearts and Minds holds much relevance for the post- Sept-11 world.

Although this film concerns itself with the Vietnam War, it is really about war in general. It explores the reasons America behaves the way it does towards other countries and towards itself, without having to come right out and tell you. It is the old writers credo, "Show, don't tell." The film bears multiple viewings, and you discover something new every time. Anybody who has loved ones in the military, and anybody who is "involved" in politics will be interested in watching this.

Ever see "Miller's Crossing"? How 'bout "Last Man Standing" with Bruce Willis? Well, before either of these movies there was "The Silent Stranger". The story leaves a few questions unanswered but for the most part it is intriguing and worth watching. I recommend it if you like either Westerns or Samurai flix. The combination is not as peculiar as you might think.
