  • Promising, but doesn't deliver.

Promising, but in the end it's pretty stupid and doesn't make much sense even if you try to embrace the world building and the narration. Joel Edgerton is not very nuanced as an actor either.

It's entertainment, but not much more.

That the storyline violates quantum theory here and there on a fundamental level, makes it less pertinent and less interesting. But the main problem is the acting that is never above adequate. The other Dessen family members are just easel figures more or less and Jennifer Connelly is very much underused here. Other roles are occasionally mildly convincing but often one-dimensional.

Taken as a whole both the authorship, the acting and the presentation leave a lot to be desired and Dark Matter doesn't deliver much of interest. At best it's a waste of time while keeping your mind off other things.

  • Great acting, but in the end it means nothing

Tim Roth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Samuel Bottomley, they all make their characters believable and in total are the only reasons to watch this short feature.

This doesn't help the story often feeling like a plastered thing on top of the core message that Michel Franco probably wanted to convey.

You learn quickly what kind of family this is about, but I found few reasons to care about any of them, including Roth's character, even so that without him I'd have walked out on this.

Much of the scenery feels like tourist photography and is very recognisable, but in a very boring way that I'm not sure why we have to suffer through. Some scenes are a little bit poetic, but yet don't touch you. It's all exhaustively plain, but in a quite realistic fashion. I like realism, but does that need to be pointless?

No, this is not a movie one has to watch at all. It starts and it ends, just like life. What a great insight.

  • Great

Great, acting, great stories that grabs you. Events unfolding that aren't predictable and spinning into a narrative describing British societies at some time not too distant from today.

Sarah Lancashire as Catherine Cawood and Siobhan Finneran as Clare Cartwright and the ever so great James Norton as Tommy Lee Royce build a very interesting thing here. The directing is impressive too.

I felt moved watching this, which almost never happens. Clare Cartwright is not only fighting crime, she's a decent human being doing her best to be a police officer, despite standard bureaucracy not always being geared for this. She's actively standing up for people in need and not just "getting the perp". It's not glamorous at all and is just gnarling hard work.

The series describe people pretty much as they are, not in a speculative way, just revealing both what is ugly and what isn't. I feel hope, not much, but some, seeing real people deal with issues like this series explore.

If every brit crime series was this good. They aren't, but this is indeed.
