As you can see by the reviews posted so far, this little gem polarises the audience.
One share of the Reviews is 7-10, the other 1-3. Almost nothing in between.
Probably this his to to with the expections.
Well, if you're looking for some fast-paced space battle pew pew laser action this isn't the movie you want to watch. This isn't a movie about aliens or about high-tech spacecraft. It's a movie about a few people in a difficult situation.
Made using simple means but with love to the detail. Retro in the best sense. Slow but thrilling. Good acting.
To give away too much of the plot would be a shame. So just watch and enjoy. (Or don't watch if you only like movies with tons of explosions and lengthy chases.)

First of all I'd like to point out that this is NOT a Science Fiction movie.
For 80% of the reviews it seems to go without saying that it IS a Sci-Fi movie. Hoewever I don't see why it could be classified that way.
Of course, there seems to be something extraterrestrial. But since the movie does not explain anything and stays vague and mystical till the end, there obviously is no science in this fiction.
But if it's not Sci-Fi, what is it then? Hard to tell. As I already stated, the whole movie is quite vague and mystical. There really aren't much hints (and certainly no explanation) about what is going on in the "world" of Annihilation. And since you don't get to know what's happening, you can't really classify the movie. Just from the things that are shown and said, I'd call it a rather bad mystery thriller. But I also see that a lot of people seem to describe it as some kind of metaphor for a psychological disorder.

To make it short: This series will make you feel betrayed.
It starts several arcs of suspense that make you continue watching but it finalizes nothing. There is no resolve at all. At the end of the first season the viewer has no answers to questions that seemed to drive the plot. And at the beginning of the second season the viewer realizes disbelievingly that this starts a completely new plot with new characters. Waste of time.
