  • Has Its Moments

I have a special place in my heart for this movie because it reminds me of a specific time and place. In December 1984, I saw Johnny Dangerously while on a pass from Basic Training. In February 1985, I saw this movie while in at technical training school. Both those movies represent a very important time in my life and the warm feelings I have for them have a lot to do with where I was in life. (Peter Cetera's Boys of Summer and Tina Turner's Private Dancer came out at the same times and reminds me of my life altering choices).

My roommate and I saw City Heat on a Saturday afternoon. I loved it. I still think its pretty darn funny even though its been savaged by the critics and most reviewers. Could it have been better? Yes. Was it terrible, no. I've always loved film noir and I love when they spoof those movies (Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is another favorite). I really wish Eastwood and Reynolds would have made another movie together. Dirty Harry teaming up with Sharky could have been epic. But this movie proves more than anything that you need good writing and good directing just as much as you need popular talent in front of the camera.

  • A Great Tribute to Film Noir

I saw this on cable a few years after it came out. It did not seem to resonate with critics at the time, but I didn't care. I loved it. Its one the first movies I ever bought on VHS. I've grown to love classic movies from the 1930s and 1940s because of this film. I still watch those old classics to this day (I just watched Passage to Marseille the other night).

My favorite scene in this movie is the one with the puppy that poops on the floor in Jimmie Sue's Father's office. The way Martin plays this scene and his dialogue just cracks me up "But its all soft and steamy" Then he leaves it on the secretary's desk and you hear her scream off screen. That entire scene never fails to make me laugh. Just thinking about that scene is cracking me up. I also love the way Reni Santoni's Captain Rodriguez pronounces pajamas as "puh yamas". I still, to this day, pronounce pajamas that way with his accent.

Martin was a comic genius, and I wish he had continued doing that kind of broad comedy (Man with Two Brains, The Jerk, The Lonely Guy, etc), but I guess he got tired of the genre.
