So far, my favorite scene is Jesus talking to Simon's wife before he heals her mother. The writers did this so well when they had Jesus recognize the sacrifices that wives make when their husbands go out to do good work. Jesus has always been aware of the contributions of women to His work. When Jesus says that traveling with a worried Simon would be even harder to deal with, that was the sweetest touch of humor. In addition to that, I want to say that this series has really brought out to me the diversity of his disciples. I never thought about how different they were and how hard it was going to be for them to get along, especially with the hated tax collector in their midst. As Jesus said, "Get used to different."
The storyline about Beth Harmon's rise to chess champion was quite interesting. She was very intense on her focus of the game and her desire to get better and better. The actress did a great job of showing that. The other half of the storyline was devoted to her adoption of the hedonistic lifestyle. We finally started to fast forward past all the incredibly boring scenes of drugs, drinking, and sex. The first few episodes were really focused on the chess and then as the series went on, we saw more of her foibles and far less chess. Someone said this series was generally acceptable for children, but I would never let my children watch this after the third episode or so.
I was really looking forward to a story about Jane and Emma's friendship. What I was NOT expecting was for it to be told against the background of the immediate day after Joseph's death. What a depressing time that was for a *all* the Saints, not just Emma and immediate family and friends. This made the overall tone of the movie rather dark when I was looking for something more uplifting. That being said, it was a good movie and the acting was good. Had I been able to watch it first in the theater or on Netflix, I probably would not have bought it. Since the only way for me to see this movie was to buy it sight unseen, I did. It will probably be a long time before I watch it again.
