  • Excellent classic romantic comedy

It happened one night was released in February 1934. It Happened one night stars Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable and was Directed by Frank Capra. Frank Capra is my favorite film director; It happened one night is my favorite Frank Capra film. Frank Capra was an excellent director who spoke well to the working man. Spoiled wealthy heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) is on a boat with her father. Ellie's father doesn't want her to marry her boyfriend King Wesley, because he doesn't approve of him. Ellie gets made and jumps of the boat and swims to shore. She goes to the nearest bus station and gets a bus ticket to go to New York to be with King Wesley. Meanwhile at the bus station reporter Peter Warne has just lost his job. On the bus Ellie meets Peter. Peter knows who Ellie is, because her father is well-known. Peter tells Ellie that he will help her find King Wesley. Peter is a gruff man who isn't going to tolerate Ellie's spoiled ways. Peter teaches Ellie how to be more humble and less spoiled. Overnight Peter and Ellie room together at a small hotel. In one of the funniest seens in film history Peter puts up a sheet so they can undress in private. He calls it "The walls of Jericho". My two favorite scenes in It happened one night are: 1. when Ellie and Peter have to hitch a ride. Peter can't get a ride by using his thumb; Ellie lifts up her skirt and they both get a ride. 2. A woman and her child are on the bus, they are obviously very poor and have been looking for work all day; like a lot of people during the great depression. The woman faints and the boy starts crying. Someone helps the woman up; Ellie and Peter both comfort the boy. Ellie gives the boy most of the little bit of money she has left. Ellie is now learned how to be less spoiled. By the end of the film Peter and Ellie fall in love. Ellie decides that king Wesley is a shallow rich snob, and that she would rather be with Peter. IT Happened one night is obviously set during the great depression. The film was released right in the height of the depression. It Happened one night has the feel of a depression era movie. The idea of the happy poor and the depressed rich show are feelings of the great depression. IT Happened one night is a pre-code film; released 5 months before the hays production code was passed. It Happened one night was the sleeper of it's year; a sleeper is a film that everyone thought would be a box-office failure but turned out to be very popular at the box-office. IT Happened one night is based on a short story called "Night Bus". It Happened one night has been copied many times: the idea of a spoiled rich young woman running away. When It Happened one night was released Columbia pictures was a small studio. IT Happened one night is a masterpiece with excellent cinematography, a flawless script, top-notch acting, colorful characters, and perfect sets. Claudette Colbert is very sexy in the lead role. IT Happened One night is a film that everyone will enjoy! My rating is 1,000 out of 10!

  • Detour is as good as B movies get!

Detour released in 1945 Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer and shot in 6 days for a very small budget, is a masterpiece and is very entertaining. Tom Neal stars as Al Roberts who is a piano player at a night club in New York City. His girlfriend Sue played by Claudia Drake is a singer at the nightclub; she wants to go to Hollywood, California. This disappoints Roberts because he is worried that he won't see her for a long time. So, Al hitchhikes from New York to California. When he is halfway there in Arizona he is pickd-up by a man named Charles Haskell. Haskell has a scar on him; Al asks Charles where the scar his from, Charles says that a woman who he picked up did it to him. Charles dies suddenly so Al takes his identification and buries him. Al picks up the same woman that scartched Charles; her name is Vera she is played by Anne Savage. Al introduces himself as Charles Haskell. Vera says that she knows that he is not Charles Haskell, because she rode with him. Vera agressively makes Al do everything she tells him to do, or she will call the police. I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't seen this movie. Detour starts out with Al being dropped of at a diner in Reno, Neveda. Al is upset; he narrates the whole story to us in flashback. Detour was released in 1945, and it looks good and old-fashioned, because of the song that is sung "I can't believe that your in love with me" which is a song from the early 1940's maybe even the 1930's, which of course wasn't old when this movie was made. The clothes, styles, and expressions are very old-fashioned. 2 things about this film are very modern though: 1. the cintementagrophy 2. The fact that Vera is very dominant and tough and she is a woman, and Al is very passive and weak and he is a man; that is something you didn't see at all in movies untill the 1970's. In most movies from the 1960's and before the female character acts scared and weak, while the male character is strong and tough. Detour for those reasons is extremely offbeat, considering when it was made, (Trust me I've seen tons of movies from that era) rating 4 stars out of 4 stars.

  • An excellent movie!

This 1933 film version of Alice in Wonderland is the best film version ever. The special effects are amazing; the costumes are extremely well-done, the acting is great, and the casting is flawless. I got this movie of ebay and saw it for the first time. I wish that this movie was on dvd. I liked the score very much. I have a crush on Alice; she is very pretty. I recommend Alice in Wonderland to fans of Alice in Wonderland. $ stars out of 4 stars.
