  • They cut the crap out of Project Runway

I used to enjoy Project Runway but then its flaws began to wear on me. The cat fights to add drama were ham-handed. Giving the designers low budgets and not enough time to execute made for a lot of crappy creations. The contestants were amateurs. Many of the challenges seemed like they were chosen with blindfolds and darts like 'this week you will each make a wedding dress out of Solo cups'. With Making the Cut most of that has been cleaned up. The contestants are not constrained by budgets and they have access to seamstresses. The contestants are actual working designers who have already achieved a level of success and Making the Cut is meant to level them up. The challenges add to and expand on each designer's aesthetic. Tim is still crazy insightful. I don't love Heidi but you can't have everything.

  • Like having the life sucked out of you in 90 minutes, but...

Like having the life sucked out of you in 90 minutes, but the comedy audio track on the DVD is funny. Two members of the Groundlings Improv Troupe send up this hideous film on the alternate sound track a la Mystery Science Three Thousand. This and this alone makes it worth renting. However to really enjoy the comedy track you need to watch the movie without it first - a scary, not in the good way, endeavor! Otherwise bad acting, bad directing, bad boom micing plague this badly written film. It's also painful to watch Adam West sell himself out for a few bucks in a small supporting role. Carmen Electra with all her wiles can't save even a minute of this mess.

  • Turned kids into news junkies

My favorite part of Saturday mornings was not the cartoons but the "In The News" segment. It was the leading factor in my later interest in news and current events. I still use the analogy Christopher Glenn used to explain to children how inflation works. (He used baseball cards instead of money: that it would require more and more of a player's card that was heavily printed to trade for a card that was not).

Christopher Glenn's voice is so burned in my brain that when I heard him not long ago on CBS radio I recognized his voice before he said his name even though it had been 25 or 30 years since I heard him last.

Christopher Glenn's passing is a great loss.
