I think this is the movie I saw in a local theater in 1979. It was titled California Fever and was out at the same time as California Dreaming. My friends and I mistook it for California Dreaming and bought tickets.
I distinctly remember George Takei being in the movie. And I thought I had had a bad delusional memory until finding this entry at IMDb.
Glad to know it wasn't a delusional memory. Whew.
