L'arche russe (2002)

  • The worst movie ever made

Absolutely the most pretentious, stereotypical and generally idiotic piece ever. The (Russian) dialog is horrible, and the cartoonish pseudo-historical pieces are worse.

The director pretends to make a movie and the "enlightened" public pretends to like it. Here's the thing: the emperor has no clothes. It's neither deep nor visually impressive. If the one-take shot excites you, I think there should be some footage of that Guinness prize winning record for the longest time spent on top of a pole somewhere out there for you. It should be just about as boring and pointless as this "movie".

  • a decent thriller

The plot is somewhat original, and all the actors did their job pretty well. There is a plenty of comic relief, too. Some things do not make a lot of sense (e.g. the first "chase" scene, why would the heroine not just hide somewhere and wait until the baddies leave?). The Russians actually speak Russian without accent, but the cars are extremely strange, with models spanning like 50 years, and so the place seems weirdly out of time. Overall, if you like thrillers you will probably like this one as well.

  • one of the best in genre

I am quite impressed. I have not watched the original (I've seen a couple of occasional episodes, and was not impressed at all, this one looks much better). The characters behave like real people, rather than some cartoonish heroes and villains. I liked the detailed political background, it really added quite a lot to the realism of the picture. Great acting, great production. These miniseries are already a great deal better than anything that ever came out of the Star Trek franchise, and how many series do we have there?

One thing though: couldn't they think of some _other_ design for the space military uniforms? Or is there some kind of sci-fi movie standard body out there that does not allow anyone to have anything else?

  • Highly overrated

This is very much overrated. I guess it carries some nostalgic value for many people. It has its moments, but every scene is heavily overacted and the plot is quite shallow. With this cast it could have been much better.

  • bad execution

plus: they do try to be faithful to the story. Sometimes they fail though (e.g. at least for me, the conversation between Gandalf and Saruman atop the tower would have definitely created a wrong impression

about the latter's intentions, had I not known it from the book).

Yet, the movie is all too jumpy and hard to follow, it just looks like they've taken a bunch of independent shots just for the sake of showing this or that particular episode, and then just pasted them together. I guess it was a noble attempt to fit as much of the original story into the movie as possible, but it, unfortunately, failed. In this case, the whole is much less than the sum of its parts. 4/10.

  • why do the people like it?

I have no idea what people find in this movie. I do not know how influential it was from a cinema history standpoint, if it was I can accept that. But then, the train arrival "movie" was even more influential and about as interesting. Really, the movie is extremely boring, I really couldn't care about the "secret of Rosebud" and the "revelation" at the end wasn't anything exciting either.

  • very beautiful

great camera work, very beautiful. I'd like just a bit more info shown in subtitles, e.g. the locations (they are rarely named, and when they are its often too generic like "Eastern Europe"). Unlike their previous film "Microcosmos" the narrative isnt so important here, so the music (which is good) works fine. 9/10.

  • Great camera work, no narration

The film shows some amazing pictures, the one thing it is missing is some narration that would help people understand the things they see. At least, naming the insects would be nice. Also without narration many very interesting events portrayed are likely to be either missed or misunderstood (eg a very funny shot of orchid attracting a drone by looking like a young bee queen, and many other things too).

  • much overrated

I cant believe this has a 7.5 rating. This movie was obviously made to show off a reconstruction of some folk songs and rituals, and the story plays a secondary role at best. It is a very boring sequence of cliches, and the ending is rather obvious too. 3/10.

Britt Eckland does look good though :)

  • avoid this one

One of the worst Bond movies overall. One thing good about it is Carlile as Renard, he's simply great as the main villain. The bad girl is OK too, Richards is quite pathetic as the Bond girl though. The rest of the movie is really bad.

The story is poorly presented and is not really believable either, probably it could work (its not like realism is required from Bond movies), but the details just totally kill it.

If you want to see a really good Brosnan movie, watch Tomorrow never dies.

  • One of the best Bond movies ever

Very very nice, 10/10. The chinese girl is great in her role, Brosnan is better than ever (definitely the best his film), good chase scenes, good villains, etc etc.

Far better than The World is Not Enough, or any other recent Bond flick.
