In what is most certainly not Cuba Gooding Jr.'s best film, his good-natured and humor-filled performance makes the movie at least enjoyable. Cuba's down-on-his-luck character returns to his hometown upon the death of his aunt (who is seen breathing and at one point moves her finger during the funeral) and must fulfill the requirements of her will: for him to revive the church gospel choir. Met with numerous challenges, he assembles a rag-tag bunch of characters to attempt to take the group to a gospel competition. Cuba's character is likeable and arguably the best thing in the film. Beyoncé Knowles isn't bad (her singing is spectacular) and the rest of the supporting cast help to make the film somewhat entertaining. It's kind of a cross between "The Music Man" and "Sister Act." A bit hokey with a cheesy ending, but good for a smile. Wait to rent it, though.
